View southwards up the West Branch of Elm Tree Creek, a tributary of the Mararoa River that drains the faulted and deeply eroded northern Takitimu Mountains, Southland. The mountains are underlain by extrusive and volcaniclastic rocks of the Permian Brook Street Terrane. The peak on the right is Excelsior Peak (1534 m).
