This volume provides the first comprehensive account of thegeology of Sumatra since the masterly synthesis of van Bemmelen(1949). Following the establishment of Geological Survey ofIndonesia, after WW II, the whole island has been mapped geologicallyat the reconnaissance level, with the collaboration of geologicalsurveys of the United States and the United Kingdom. The mappingprogramme, completed in the mid-1990s, together with supplementarydata obtained by academic institutions and petroleum and mineralexploration companies, has resulted in a vast increase in geologicalinformation, which is summarized in this volume. The synthesisof structural controls on sedimentation and magmatism duringthe evolution of Sumatra since the late Paleozoic has provideda background for the formation of economic deposits of metallicminerals, coal, oil and gas. The volume provides a sound basisfor future geological research and for the exploration of theenergy and mineral resources of the island.
