Part 3 Historical Synthesis

Chapter 21 Neogene-Quaternary history

This is the final historical chapter in this work outlining principal post-Paleogene events. Section 21.1 summarizes the time scale for these events. The evidence for this is mostly in the interpretation of geomorphic features of uplift and denudation with little preservation of onshore sediments until after the main glaciation had ceased its erosive activity. The consequential depositional record is thus mainly submarine until Holocene time, when it could relate to onshore history. Figure 21.1 shows the distribution of Neogene and Quaternary volcanics, hydrothermal zones and areas of recent seismic activity.

Many geoscientists are preoccupied with the closing stages of this story and another volume this size.
